Books are also victims of piracy. On the Internet, illegal sites offer tens of thousands of recently released books.

Every literary season, hundreds of books try to do well to be in the bestsellers. On the Internet, illegal sites distort this competition and put tens of thousands of books online for free as soon as they are released. Every month for two years, a reader has illegally downloaded two novels onto her e-reader, a choice which is primarily motivated by the price of the books.

Illegally downloading a book is punishable by a fine of up to 1,500 euros. On the main website, more than 10 million stolen works are posted online by pirates. Books released very recently are also available. This site, created in 2009, quickly worried authorities around the world. In 2022, the FBI manages to arrest two of its founders, Russians. They eventually escaped and are still wanted. Hackers are constantly adapting. To protect their platform, they create copies of their site.
