Five years ago, the Joker Todd Phillips had transcended me and my critique was dithyrambic : a film close to masterpiece ! Bold, grandiose, dark and chilling, of these films which leave you speechless when you leave the cinema: rare.

Joaquin Phoenix played Arthur Fleck, a failed and disturbed actor with unparalleled intensity. In 2020, the Oscar for best actor was the absolute no-brainer that crowned this major work.

When Arthur meets Lee

Seeing its sequel, always imagined by Todd Philipps, there was no doubt, I would be there! For Folie à deux, the director once again transposes us alongside the actor of his own tragedy, I named Arthur Fleck.

Imprisoned for his crimes, the psychotic, awaiting trial, wanders the sinister corridors of Arkham Asylum when his path crosses that of Harleen Quinzel, alias Lee, also interned. This meeting upsets him, he falls in love and, no longer feeling alone, lets himself be drawn into a madness… for two.

Added value? It’s up to you to decide

Lights, colors, grain, everything is there in the photography to make this second opus a clear continuity. But, where Todd Philipps intellectualized the universe of superheroes, even giving a social dimension to his character, conductor of his chaos, he reduces it here to instrumentalization.

The scenario between trial scenes and imaginary sequences of the love story he could experience is nothing innovative and the whole thing loses flavor…

Does Lady Gaga, the new leading figure in the casting as the future Harley Quinn, really spark? In addition to Joaquin Phoenix’s still outstanding performance, the film Folie à deux does it really have added value? It’s up to you to decide!
