A bizarre moment occurred in the Belgian cyclocross race in Beringen. Midway through the race, Eli Iserbyt crashed after a collision with Ryan Kamp. Out of pure frustration, the Belgian champion stomped on the derailleur of the young Dutchman’s bike, who then confronted the Pauwels Sauzen – Bingoal rider. Ultimately, Iserbyt was disqualified.
Kamp attempted to overtake Iserbyt on the inside but took the corner with too much speed. Their shoulders collided, causing both riders to crash. The Belgian took the worst of it, hitting his chest on a post. While getting up, he walked over Kamp’s bike and stomped hard on the Dutchman’s derailleur. Kamp grabbed Iserbyt briefly, and a short exchange of words followed, showing that he clearly wasn’t pleased. Kamp had to carry his bike on his shoulder to the pit area, where he received a replacement. Iserbyt had to stop briefly to stretch his back, but after six laps, he was pulled off the course and was no longer allowed to continue.
After the race, Iserbyt spoke with Sporzaexpressing regret while also remaining somewhat critical of his competitor. “My reaction was unnecessary,” he reflected on the incident with Kamp. “This is something that’s been an issue for previous seasons. He cuts corners more often, and he did it again now. I later realized that it wasn’t wise. The stomping was more of a reaction to something Ryan said. But my action wasn’t necessary,” he concluded. The race was eventually won by Lars van der Haar.
