The Saint-Étienne University Hospital exceptionally opened its services to the public for one day on the occasion of the Science Festival. A fun way to take the drama out of the hospital and raise awareness of how it works to relieve stress and create a bond with the public.

Unusually, the examination room is full of people to witness the biopsy of a tumor assisted by a scanner, a delicate operation. “Be careful, you remember, there is the aorta behind!” warns Sylvain Grange, interventional radiologist at Saint-Étienne University Hospital. A young woman looks at him then turns her attention back to her patient, a superb orange pumpkin, protected by sterile fields.
And yes, that day is Open Day at the hospital. Many services are open on the occasion of the Science Festival. Volunteers are invited to practice in real conditions. Only the patients are fake, all the material is available.
An exceptional day to discover health professions in a fun way. “It always allows us to better understand, to better visualize things when we act and it gives rise to questions.” analyzes the caregiver before taking everyone to the imaging room. Good news, the pumpkin was not damaged. Sylvain reassures his student for a day. “Well already, you haven’t gone too far. This is very good news for the patient.“. Phew! Everyone is relieved and laughing.
Blood analysis, nuclear medicine and ultrasound… Nearly a hundred health professionals were mobilized to answer questions from curious people of all ages. “It’s very good that they can open up and we can discover a little more what’s behind because it’s quite complex” rejoices a visitor after his visit to the analysis laboratory.
Janni traveled from Vienna to Isère on the advice of his main teacher to learn about the different professions surrounding medicine. “I want to move towards cardiology, and that allows me to see other fields” he emphasizes.
“It’s an opportunity to discover the hospital like you’ve never seen it before, to discover the jobs that exist. I am accompanied by my daughter so it was also the opportunity to go see the Teddy Bear Hospital” adds a young mother.
Because the youngest are entitled to their own service, the cuddly toy hospital run by 3rd year medical students. The opportunity to reassure them about the hospital world. Budding future doctors diagnose and treat their plush patients, making a hospital visit more fun and less intimidating.
The goal is for people to be less afraid of coming for treatment. If they have seen the services when there is no issue, there is no stress, it can always be easier for them.
