Hainaut Assizes: he will be tried for the murder of an 18-month-old child in Jumet

The trial of Aïssa Mokhtari will begin this Thursday before the Hainaut Assize Court in Mons with the jury drawing. The 34-year-old Algerian, who uses different identities, is being prosecuted for the murder of little Diden Dumonceau, aged 18 months, committed in Jumet on September 28, 2021.

On September 29, 2021, a pediatrician from the Grand Hôpital de Charleroi notified the judicial authorities of the suspicious death of the child. The mother and her new companion were then deprived of their liberty when the investigation was opened.
A few hours earlier, the mother had called the emergency services and asked them to go to her home in Jumet, where her son was in the company of his new companion, the accused. According to the latter, the child drowned in the bath, even though he had left him alone for a few minutes. However, according to emergency doctors, the child was not wet.
The autopsy found no trace of water in the child’s lungs. So he didn’t drown. On the other hand, his body was covered with old bruises and the child was seriously injured in the testicles.
The accused is of Algerian nationality. He stayed illegally in Belgium and was convicted of drug trafficking in 2011 by the Court of Appeal. He was expelled from the territory in 2014, but he returned to Belgium, still illegally, in 2020. He has been detained since September 30, 2021.
