In the National Assembly, pro-independence deputy Emmanuel Tjibaou welcomes “the words of solidarity” from Michel Barnier in favor of New Caledonia

During questions to the government in the National Assembly, several overseas deputies returned to Tuesday’s announcements by the Prime Minister, who indicated his desire to find a form of appeasement, to think about the reconstruction of New Caledonia. The abandonment of the reform of the electoral body which had ignited the powder in the archipelago and the postponement of local elections were welcomed by the deputy Emmanuel Tjibaou (Democratic and Republican Left) and decried by Nicolas Metzdorf (Ensemble pour la République ).

“Mr Prime Minister, during your general policy declaration, the Caledonians felt humiliated”estimated the Caledonian Macronist MP. “You didn’t have a word for them (…) You abandoned them by abandoning the thaw of the electorate”he continued.

“The Prime Minister spoke very clearly about New Caledonia and the future of all Caledonians, without exception”retorted the new Overseas Minister, François-Noël Buffet, referring to “an extremely serious situation” and responsibility “to respond to the economic and social emergency”.

“We will quickly set up a mission (…) with permanent people who will be able to follow all the files in an interministerial manner, with the sole objective: efficiency, concrete responses”developed the senator, lawyer and specialist in immigration issues.

Emmanuel Tjibaou, first independentist deputy elected since 1986, welcomed “words of solidarity” by Mr. Barnier “towards my compatriots”. “Yesterday’s announcements certainly begin a constructive approach”he considered, also hoping that these statements “are mourning a method initiated by your predecessors”.

“How is involved in the continuation of the decolonization process, in order to support New Caledonia towards its full emancipation? »he questioned, describing “a country bruised in its flesh”.

“I hope that we find the path to appeasement”reaffirmed Mr. Barnier, who wishes to achieve “an institutional, political solution”. “I said yesterday, we will take the time to rework the question of the electorate”he assured.
