The Israeli military says Iran has fired missiles at Israel and air alert sirens sound across the country.

Army spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari released a video statement Tuesday saying “the air defense system is fully operational, detecting and intercepting threats wherever necessary, even right now.” .

Shortly after, a series of explosions were heard in Tel Aviv and near Jerusalem. It is not yet clear whether these are interceptions or missile landings. Near Jerusalem, the explosions were so strong that the windows shook.

Residents were ordered to shelter in place and stay near bomb shelters. The order was sent to cell phones and announced on national television. Television channels reported sirens in parts of Jerusalem and central Israel.

Iranian media released videos that appeared to show missile strikes at several sites across the country, but the Iranian government did not immediately acknowledge what was happening.

The alerts were triggered after a day of rocket and missile fire from Lebanon. Israeli authorities also warned that Iran could be preparing a missile attack.

Israel warned there would be “repercussions” if Iran attacked.
