This week’s incidents occur in a context of increased tensions between Lebanon and IsraelHezbollah and Israeli forces have been clashing almost daily for more than 11 months, against the backdrop of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

These clashes have left hundreds dead in Lebanon and dozens in Israel, and displaced tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border.

On Tuesday, Israel said it had set a goal of ending Hezbollah attacks in the north to allow Israeli residents of the area to return home.

Hezbollah began striking Israel almost immediately after the October 7 Hamas terror attack that sparked the war between Israel and Hamas. Since then, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire daily, repeatedly coming close to all-out war and forcing tens of thousands of people on both sides of the border to evacuate their homes.

Gaza’s health ministry says more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed in the territory since the October 7 Hamas attack. The ministry does not distinguish between fighters and civilians in its count, but says just over half of those killed were women and children. Israel says it has killed more than 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.

The war caused enormous destruction and displaced around 90% of Gaza’s 2.3 million people.
