In the emigrants’ apartment in Peguera, Thommy Schmelz had a seizure. “Like an epileptic fit. He can’t breathe anymore and had vomit in his throat. It was very, very bad. I wouldn’t wish that on anyone to see something like that,” the emigrant continues.

The two already lived in Brazil, Sweden, Austria and up Mallorca – always where the cook and the waitress found a job. “Before we went to Brazil for the first time in 2007, we were together in Germany for about ten years,” says Kathrin Mermi-Schmelz.
In 2015, the couple moved back to Europe – partly because Thommy was at a suffered from severe pancreatitis. The emigrants first came to Mallorca in 2017, when they began to “Potato House” to work in Peguera. During the pandemic, both worked on a food truck in Germany.
