Fifty-nine Walloon farms are opening their doors to the public this Saturday and Sunday on the occasion of Open Farm Days, we learned on Tuesday.

These Open Farm Days, which have attracted some 60,000 visitors each year for 27 years, give the public the opportunity to discover producers, taste local products and enjoy a moment of relaxation (carriage or donkey rides, in mazes and bale circuits, inflatable castles, wooden games, face painting workshops, etc.).

The operators participating in the event range from breeders to winegrowers, including beekeepers and market gardeners.

With the exception of the expected rain this Saturday evening, it should be sunny this weekend. In recent months, farmers and their daily lives have been at the heart of the news. The visitors met by our journalist Sébastien Prophète told him that they were already “sensitive to the agricultural cause even before all the protest actions, these demonstrations”.

Julie Gillin is a producer at Purnode. “We already have a lot of public interest, we are very close to the consumer, so we really explain what we do” she explains. “I think it still raises awareness among people who have seen all the demonstrations. There are perhaps people who are still asking the right questions.”

The one who produces sheep’s cheese confirms the usefulness of these special days. “It’s important to explain to people where the cheese comes from, where everything we make comes from. And the work behind it, because there’s really a lot of work behind it and we don’t know doesn’t always realize it.”

The list of participating farms and the programme for these two days is available on the website www.jfo.be.
