What prices for Emilia Pérez and Jacques Audiard? What favorites stand out? We take stock of the trends, while the price season will be in full swing until March.
Four awards, including best musical or comedy film: Emilia Perez undeniably comes out of Golden Globes with a new status. The French film of Jacques Audiard was the most awarded of the evening, this Sunday in Los Angeles, in a ceremony often considered to be the antechamber of the Oscars. “In this awards season where the race seems very open, Emilia Perez gets ahead of the competition, while the finish line looms on the horizon” writes for example Variety this Monday, judging the tricolor feature film “in pole position to win major statuettes.”
So which statuettes can you really aim for? Emilia Perez et Jacques Audiardon Sunday, March 2, 2025, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood?
BEST MOVIE
There is now no longer any doubt that the musical in Mexico will already have a place of choice when the nominations for the 97th ceremony fall (Friday January 17, 2025). However, the victory ofEmilia Perez at the Golden Globes offers no real guarantee in the premier category of the Oscars. First, because the electoral body of the Golden Globes is smaller and much more international than that of the Oscars. Then, because Academy voters are often reluctant to give the prestigious “Best Picture” statuette to a musical. The sublime West Side Story of Spielberg, winner of the Golden Globe in 2021, knows something about it, beaten by CODA during the Oscars. Alone Chicago (in 2002) has been crowned in recent decades! If Anora by Sean Baker – Palme d'Or at Cannes – came up short on Sunday evening and seems destined to be the loser of the 2025 season, Emilia Perez will find another strong competitor on his road to glory: The Brutalist. This large fresco about a Holocaust survivor architect who emigrates to the United States, describes the American dream as America adores them. A magnificent film awarded Best Drama, Best Director and Best Actor at the Golden Globes. Enough to make him, obviously, the real favorite for the next Oscars, even if Variety suggests that “the French touch ofEmilia Perez” could play for her, referring to the fact that the musical could also benefit from the “halo of the Paris Olympic Games.”
BEST FOREIGN FILM
If the grand prize for Best Film will be complicated to obtain, Emilia Perez On the other hand, it seems very well on its way to winning the statuette for Best Foreign Film. Crowned at the Golden Globes in the category, the feature film Jacques Audiard gained the advantage over its main competitor, Wild Fig Seeds by Mohammad Rasoulof (knowing that the Indian All We Imagine as Light was not selected by the Indian committee and will therefore not be in the running for the Oscars). A victory ofEmilia Perez for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film would thus compensate for a possible defeat against Brutalist for Best Film. And it would be more than a consolation prize for Audiard, knowing that France has been chasing this famous statuette for more than 30 years: the last French film to have won the category was called Indochina (by Régis Wargnier) in 1993.
BEST DIRECTOR / BEST SCREENPLAY
Here again, if there is no doubt that Jacques Audiard will be nominated, the French filmmaker risks having difficulty winning the bid against The Brutalist. In any case, he will not start favorite against Brady Corbet. The talented 36-year-old American has just beaten him in the Golden Globesafter winning the Silver Lion for Best Director at the last Venice Film Festival. Corbet will be the big favorite in the category where Sean Baker (Anora) will also have a real chance. The Oscar for Best Screenplay will be more open, intrinsically, since the films that competed at the Golden Globes will be divided into two categories at the Oscars: Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay. The Brutalist will certainly be the favorite of the premiere, whileEmilia Pérez (inspired by the novel Listen by Boris Razon) will be in the second, facing Conclave (which just so happened to win the Golden Globe on Sunday night).
BEST ACTOR / BEST ACTRESS
The French film could also allow Zoe Saldana to win his first Oscar. Sacred this weekend, the star of Marvel and Avatar will be the big favorite for the Female Supporting Role prize next March, while her breathtaking performance in Emilia Perez (she is the lead in the film in reality) deserves this recognition. The Oscar for Best Actress will be tighter: Demi Moore has clearly taken a step ahead of the competition and in particular Karla Sofia Gascón (Emilia Perez), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked) et Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), while the Brazilian surprise Fernanda Torres – who won the other Globe on Sunday for I’m Still Here to everyone's surprise – will possibly have difficulty repeating the feat with the Academy voters.
And for men? Timothée Chalamet in Bob Dylan, not helped by the current flop at the US box office and lukewarm reviews, has little chance, while Ralph Fiennes in Cardinal Conclave seems to have fallen behind its rivals. The duel will a priori be played between Sebastian Stanand his performance transformed into A Different Manet Adrien Brodyfor his moving incarnation of Brutalist. Twenty years later, the American actor of Polish origin, who already left on Sunday evening with his GG under his arm, seems to be on a highway to do the trick again. Pianist (2003) and treat yourself to a second statuette.
So in the match The Brutalist vs. Emilia Perezwhich is emerging for Oscars 2025who will leave with the most trophies?
