Monday January 6, Minister of the Economy Éric Lombard received Olivier Faure to discuss the state budget and social security. According to information from BFMTV, the leader of the PS threatened the government with a motion of censure.
While François Bayrou's government was appointed just two weeks ago, negotiations regarding the state budget and social security for 2025 have already begun. Monday January 6, the new Minister of the Economy Éric Lombard, for example, invited the first secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, to start finding compromises. As BFMTV revealed, the leader of the PS would not have hesitated to threaten the government with a motion of censure, particularly in the absence of “remarkable concessions” on the question of pension reform at age 64.
“We want a negotiation”explained Olivier Faure to the press, at the end of this meeting attended by the presidents of parliamentary groups Patrick Kanner and Boris Vallaud, but also the Minister of Public Accounts, Amélie de Montchalin. “It was a meeting that we hoped would be useful, but we called back […] that we were not ready to sell out and that if there were no remarkable concessions for the French, we were ready again to take our responsibilities, including through censorship”he continued, as announced by BFMTV.
“A proposal for the evolution of retirement reform”
For his part, Patrick Kanner, president of the socialist group in the Senate, assured that the government had discussed “a proposal for modification and evolution of the retirement reform”. “The minister in charge, Amélie de Montchalin, did not go into detail, but clearly the pressure that we have put from the start on this issue is moving the lines within the government and that is entirely positive”he assured after the exchange with the Minister of the Economy, Éric Lombard.
