Didier Deschamps, coach of the team, explained the reasons for his departure in 2026 in a first extract from his interview which will be broadcast on the 1 p.m. television news on TF1 this Wednesday.

LCI broadcast this Wednesday morning a first extract from the interview with Didier Deschamps which will be broadcast this Wednesday in the 1 p.m. television news and in which he announces that he will leave the bench of the France team after the 2026 World Cup The coach spoke as part of the launch of the Yellow Pieces operation, of which he is the sponsor of the operation alongside Brigitte Macron.

“You have to know how to say stop”

“I’m not here to make an announcement but it will be 2026,” says the boss of the Blues with a smile. “I've been here since 2012, I'm scheduled until 2026, the next World Cup. It will stop there because it has to stop there at some point. In my head, it's very clear .”

Relaunched on this announcement, the coach accepts his choice which comes two months before the next gathering of the Blues for the quarter-final of the League of Nations against Croatia (first leg on March 20, return on the 23rd). “I served my time with the same desire, the same passion to maintain the French team at the highest level,” he added. “But 2026 is very good.”

And why not beyond? “We never want it to stop when it’s a beautiful thing,” he admits. “Afterwards, you have to know how to say stop. There is a life afterward. I don't know what it will be but it will be very good too. It's going to be 14 years, that's a long time too.” Record longevity on the Blues bench. “I’m not here for the records, especially for the demands,” DD points out. “The most important thing is that the French team remains at the top where it has been for many years.”

Under his command since 2012, the France team won the 2018 World Cup and the 2021 Nations League. It also played (and lost) the finals of Euro 2016 and the 2022 World Cup and can still claim two titles under the orders of Deschamps: the League of Nations in 2025 and the World Cup 2026.
