Lamezia Terme, UIL Calabria: “Every death at work is a failure. We need an extraordinary safety plan”

Uil Calabria expresses deep condolences and closeness to the family of the worker who tragically lost his life falling from scaffolding on a construction site in Lamezia. This latest tragedy represents a dramatic warning for everyone: work cannot and must never turn into a mortal risk.
“Every death at work is a collective failure of our society – declares Mariaelena Senese, General Secretary of Uil Calabria – our daily commitment, through campaigns such as Zero deaths at work, is to strongly reiterate that every life lost is an unacceptable wound for the dignity of work and for the future of our region”.
The Secretary also recalled the words of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who in his end-of-year speech underlined the need to put workplace safety at the center of the national agenda. “Your words – adds the General Secretary of Uil Calabria – must be translated into immediate actions: we can no longer tolerate delays or superficiality. The data on unrelated deaths, particularly in Calabria, speak of an emergency that requires extraordinary responses.”
Uil Calabria therefore launches an appeal to the institutions and the business world to: strengthen inspection controls to ensure that safety standards are strictly respected and applied; invest in continuous training for both workers and employers, so that they are fully aware of the risks and importance of the correct use of personal protective equipment and promote a culture of safety, in the belief that prevention must become a priority shared by all, through awareness campaigns and constant dialogue between social partners, businesses and institutions.
Uil Calabria reiterates the urgency of opening an extraordinary table with the Calabria Region to implement an extraordinary plan for safety at work. “We can no longer postpone – concludes Mariaelena Senese – every worker has the right to return home safe and sound. Every avoidable death is a responsibility that we must assume as a community.”
Uil Calabria will continue to be at the forefront of this battle, carrying forward with determination the Zero deaths at work campaign, so that tragedies like the one in Lamezia belong to the past and never happen again.
