A first case of the new variant of the Mpox virus has been identified in France. Very contagious, it is transmitted during prolonged physical contact and sexual relations.
This is a first on French soil. A person suffering from the new variant of Mpox (formerly monkeypox) has been diagnosed in Brittany. According to the Ministry of Health, the infected person did not travel to Central Africa but was in contact with two people returning from this region of the world. The variant is very contagious and its symptoms include fever and rashes (pimples) all over the body. It is mainly transmitted following prolonged skin contact and sexual relations.
Since this summer, cases of this new variant have been recorded in Sweden, Germany, the United Kingdom and Belgium. Faced with the threat of an epidemic, specialists are calling for precaution but are not yet sounding the alarm. “We already had an Mpox epidemic in 2022, which was contained thanks to vaccination”, explains Karine Lacombe, infectious disease specialist at Saint-Antoine hospital (Paris, 12).
