The referee’s performance in the Super Cup semi-final analyzed by X-ray by Mediaset expert Di Marco, the Paduan whistler booked 2

Daniele Chiffi, the choice for Inter-Atalanta was born in Padua on 14 December 1984: he started refereeing in 2002 and after years of apprenticeship in the minor leagues he reached the Lega Pro in 2011. Slender physique and strong personality, sport has always been part of his life: as a boy he practiced athletics, with a decent career as a middle-distance runner, specializing in the 400 and 800 metres. By work he is a management engineer. Daniele Chiffi’s first Serie A management dates back to 11 May 2014: referee Sampdoria-Napoli finished 2-5. In January 2023 he reached 80 appearances in Serie A with the Spezia-Lecce match, while at the end of the 2022-23 season he received the Giovanni Mauro award. This season so far it had been very up and down at the start but then he recovered. Let’s see how he did yesterday.

Chiffi’s history with Inter and Atalanta

The Paduan referee had recently directed Inter in the 6-0 against Lazio at the Olimpico. In general, the Venetian match director’s history with the Nerazzurri is all in all positive in terms of results. Out of 14 matches previously refereed by him, Inter had managed to collect a total of 8 victories in addition to 4 draws and 2 defeats. Twelve crossings with the Goddess who with Chiffi have won 6 times, drawn 3 and lost 3 times.

The referee cautioned 2 players

Assisted by assistants Cecconi and Bahri with Zufferli fourth man, Abyss in the and Wonder in the Avar, the referee cautioned two players: Scalvini (A), Carlos Augusto (I) Time added: 0′ – 6′.

Inter-Atalanta, the slow-motion cases

These are the main doubtful episodes of the race. In the 3rd minute Ruggeri stops Bisseck for a foul. Chiffi’s reading is correct and understandably does not extract the mystery. In the 25th minute Barella complains because his attempted cross is stopped by Ruggeri with the arm slightly wide. Chiffi does not intervene but then he sanctions a protesting Bastoni. In the 28th minute Scalvini’s stomp on Barella. Padova’s whistle warns the Atalanta defender. Perhaps a little excessive warning. In the 43rd minute Ruggeri touches the ball but then goes unbalanced and lands, hitting him lightly on the foot, Dumfries in the penalty area. Chiffi sees everything and judges the contact to be regular. VAR cannot intervene as it is a field decision.

The key episode came in the 49th minute. The corner from which Inter’s goal comes is non-existent: after Hien’s advance on Bisseck it is the Nerazzurri defender who has the last touch. The protests of the Atalanta player were corrected but were not listened to by the match director. On the other hand, VAR did well with the Abisso-Meraviglia pair on the presumed push of the Dutchman on Scalvini which however accentuated the fall considerably.

In the 72nd minute Atalanta scored through Ederson but after a few minutes of review, De Keteleare’s position was deemed punishable as he was in an offside position for a few millimetres. VAR reading correct, Chiffi blameless: almost impossible to notice the off-side with the naked eye. In the 88th minute yellow for Carlos Augusto, who intervened late on Palestra. After 6′ of injury time Inter-Atalanta ends 2-0.

Di Marco’s sentence

To clarify the doubtful cases of the match from the Mediaset studies is the former referee Andrea De Marco who on Canale 5 analyzed the refereeing of Inter-Atalanta starting from the 1-0 for Inzaghi’s team: “We are at the beginning of the second half, there is an angle in Inter’s favor. Header from Bisseck and the ball ends up at the bottom. You can see from the images that iThe ball is touched by the Inter player and not by the Atalanta player. The action that led to Inter’s lead was then born from this angle. At the VAR there was a review of Dumfries’ push on Scalvini: he puts his arm on his back, the usual discussion of the intensity that the VAR cannot decide but only the referee.”

On a possible penalty for Inter at the end of the first half: “Lautaro’s heel and then contact between Dumfries and Ruggeri. The Dutchman continues running, prepares to kick and then tackles Ruggeri’s leg. I believe that the correct decision was that of the camp and that is not to grant the penalty”. Finally on the disallowed goal against Atalanta, which could have reopened the match at the end: “You beat and counter in the area, then Ederson arrives who shoots and scores. De Ketelaere, who cleared the ball to pass it to his teammate, was just offside. Even if it was minimal, there is little to discuss.”

Gasperini’s anger

Under accusation for a forced turnover, Gasperini defended his choices and also criticized the referee: “The first goal doesn’t existbecause the corner isn’t there, there’s a foul by de Vrij in front of Carnesecchi and then Dumfries’ push on Scalvini: three episodes in one”
