The grove snail is the animal of the year 2025. According to the Nature conservation organization Pro Natura promote a respectful approach to the biodiversity beneath our feet.

The snail is part of the enormous variety of creatures that break down organic material and add it to the soil, Pro Natura wrote in a statement on Friday. This makes her a “soil maker”. Where the soil is damaged by sealing, heavy machinery or the use of pesticides, species such as the snail snail, which is widespread throughout Switzerland, suffer.

The cottage is more than a cottage

With a shell diameter of around 2.5 centimeters, grove snails are one of the larger native snail species. The snails’ houses are creamy white to pastel red and have up to five dark bands.

The snail shell is not just the snail’s place of refuge when it is dry or cold, explained Pro Natura. The calcareous shell also contains the animal’s heart, liver, lungs, stomach and kidneys.

According to Pro Natura, grove snails, also known as grove snails, travel 350 centimeters per hour. According to the organization, it is unfair that they are not very popular with some gardeners: Most snail species would not attack lettuce and flowers, writes Pro Natura. Some species are even useful in the garden because they eat the eggs of other snail species.

According to the report, slug pellets also kill species such as the grove snail. The nature conservation organization has therefore also Tips on how to effectively protect lettuce against snail damage. Collecting snails and taking them to another location is therefore the most nature-friendly method.
