Justin Trudeau announced today that he will step down as Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. He also prorogued Parliament until March 24, while the Liberal Party chooses a new leader. We thank Mr. Trudeau for his years of service to Canada and offer him and his family our best wishes for the future.
There is no doubt that Canada needs new leadership, and after a decade in power, the Liberals do not deserve another chance, no matter who leads their party. It is high time to change government, but it is not a question of change for the sake of change: we need a government that will move us forward with determination while knowing how to demonstrate fairness and justice for all. and all. The time has come for change that truly places the well-being of Canadians at the heart of our priorities.
It would be a mistake to think that any form of change would benefit middle-class families. In fact, the danger that a Conservative government led by Pierre Poilievre would represent cannot be overemphasized. The damage to public services and Canada’s social safety net would be catastrophic. All the progress made to strengthen our public health system, workers’ rights and climate action would be reversed.
Now is the time to make tangible progress. Instead of undoing what has been accomplished so far – like the pan-Canadian early learning and child care system, federal anti-scab legislation, and the introduction of a dental and drug coverage – we must elect a government that will continue these vitally important advances. We need a government that truly works for the middle class, that will ensure that hard-earned gains not only endure, but grow for the benefit of all Canadians. The Liberals had their chance. The Conservatives will only make an already bad situation worse. The time has come to elect a government led by Jagmeet Singh and the NDP, the only true party of working people in Canada.
