For the eighth consecutive year, Emmanuel Macron presented his wishes to the French for 2025. A speech which particularly tensed the left and the far right, even though the head of state seems willing to propose a referendum.

The political year 2024 was chaotic. And, from the end of Emmanuel Macron's televised speech, Tuesday January 31 at 8 p.m., to send his wishes to the French for the new year, the reactions of the political parties were not long in coming. If the president recognized that the dissolution of last June “brought for the moment more divisions to the Assembly than solutions for the French” et “produces more instability than serenity“, for the left, this is not enough. For Manuel Bompard, “it is not enough to recognize one's responsibility, one must draw all the political conclusions: leave“. Same observation for LFI MP Thomas Portes, guest on Europe 1 Soir: “He himself said that the problem was him. He should not have presented wishes, but apologies and announced that he was leaving power.”

On the other side of the political spectrum, the National Rally is on the same wavelength. Guillaume Bigot, party deputy, did not mince his words at Stéphanie De Muru's microphone on Europe 1: “This clip, we have the impression that he was an influencer and that he was disappearing behind the images, like a voice-over.” Reactions were more moderate in the center and on the right. The deputy secretary of Les Républicains Geoffroy Didier spoke “humility and lucidity” in the speech of the head of state, calling for “look aheadt” and search for “stability.” On BFMTV, Catherine Vautrin greeted “very concrete announcements“from the president and praised”his capacity for humility towards our fellow citizens.”

Open to a referendum

During his speech, Emmanuel Macron opened the way for a referendum to give the French a voice. On the left, Fabien Roussel approved this decision, according to Le Figaro: “Macron discovers democracy in 2025. Everything happens !” before continuing: “We have no shortage of ideas to submit to him.”. The EELV-NFP MP, Sandrine Rousseau urges the Head of State, ona referendum on pensions.

The spokesperson for the National Rally and MEP, Aleksandar Nikolic sees a glimmer of hope: “I hope that (Emmanuel Macron) will go through to the end and that the French will be consulted“. “This is a golden opportunity, the country will be blocked for another six months, but I am convinced that the French want to choose their destiny.” His teammate, Guillaume Bigot is sharper: “The subject of the referendum that Emmanuel Macron is asking is yes or no, it must go to the end of my mandate.”
