One of the best and most underrated action movies of this year has now landed on Netflix
. Director George Miller returns to the guzzoline-seeking post-apocalypse of Mad Max for the prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga
which is now available to stream on the platform. And it’s certainly worth checking out as we head into the new year.
Directed and produced by George Miller, who wrote the screenplay with Nico Lathouris, Furious explores a previously unseen time in the world of Mad Max. Starring Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit, Peaky Blinders) as the titular apocalyptic warrior (taking over from Charlize Theron’s stellar turn in Mad Max: Fury Road) and Chris Hemsworth (The Avengers, Thor) as the villainous warlord Dementus, the rest of the cast includes Tom Burke (The Lazarus Project, The Crown), Alyla Browne (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart), Lachy Hulme (The Matrix Revolutions), and Nathan Jones (Mad Max: Fury Road). Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is available to stream on Netflix now, and you can check out the synopsis below.
“Snatched from the Green Place of Many Mothers, young Furiosa falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus. Sweeping through the Wasteland, they come across the Citadel, presided over by the Immortan Joe. As the two tyrants fight for dominance, Furiosa soon finds herself in a nonstop battle to make her way home.”
‘Furiosa’ Boasts a Score of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but Sadly Struggled at the Box Office
Mad Max creator George Miller expertly continues the legacy of the post-apocalyptic action franchise, with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga being met with rave reviews from both critics and audiences alike. The prequel boasts a score of 90% from critics and 88% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus reading, “Retroactively enriching Fury Road with greater emotional heft if not quite matching it in propulsive throttle, Furiosa is another glorious swerve in mastermind George Miller’s breathless race towards cinematic Valhalla.” MovieWeb’s own Julian Roman, meanwhile, heaped praise on Miller’s continued success in bringing some of the most uniquely thrilling action sequences to the screen.
“Miller’s mastery of action scene dynamics continues to astound. There are chases aplenty. Each one is visually unique with its own storyline. Praetorian Jack’s (Tom Burke) efforts delivering Immortan Joe’s fuel and bullets will kick your ass and break a foot doing it.”

Even though Tom Hardy hasn’t seen Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, the actor believes the movie is “bound to be special” thanks to George Miller.
Sadly, while Furiosa was met with outstanding analysis from everyone who saw it, not enough people did, with the Mad Max prequel grossing just $173.8 million against its budget of $168 million and thus becoming something of a box office bomb. While any future installments in the franchise have yet to be confirmed, this could affect whether Miller ever gets to make his long-awaited Mad Max: The Wasteland.
But it’s not all bad news! As, alongside Furiosa: A Mad Max SagaNetflix users can also stream Tom Hardy’s action movie masterpiece Mad Max: Fury Roadwhich follows road warrior “Mad Max” Rockatansky as he joins forces with Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa.
