Switzerland slipped into 2025 on Wednesday night. In many places across the country, New Year’s Eve was celebrated with fireworks and parties in the bitter cold. But old traditions are also part of the turn of the year.

(Keystone-SDA) The highlight of Zurich’s New Year’s Eve was the 15-minute fireworks display that lit up the night sky over Lake Zurich. Shortly beforehand, all lights around the lake basin were turned off.
In the city of Bern, the bells of the cathedral rang out the old year. This was followed by a full ring of bells to get in the mood for the new year.
A silent disco took place at the Bô Noël Christmas market in Lausanne. Visitors were able to dance to the sounds of their choice using headphones. In Biel BE you could skate on the Place de l’Esplanade until late at night.
The traditional New Year’s Eve sledding took place in Hospental UR on December 31st. At midnight everyone met on the village bridge to ring in the New Year with fireworks and a free glass of beer.
