At the beginning of November, a great white shark measuring between 3.5 and 4.5 meters was observed off the Var coast, in the Mediterranean, by members of the Apecs association. The information, relayed by the Elasmed observatory and revealed by Nice-Morning this Monday, was shared on Facebook on November 14.
“The conclusions are simple, it is a great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias),” said Elasmed, calling this observation “superb news” for this critically endangered species. “It has almost disappeared from our French coasts, and even from the Mediterranean, due to very disparate levels of protection depending on the country,” underlines the association.
Another event in Sanary-sur-Mer
According to reported figures, sightings of this species fell by 45% between the periods 1989-1998 (85 reports) and 1999-2008 (46 reports).
This event comes a few weeks after another notable scene in September, where “Blue Skin” sharks were seen devouring the carcass of a sperm whale off the coast of Sanary-sur-Mer.
