An Indian MP, Baba Siddique, was shot dead on Saturday, weeks before key local elections, a member of his party said, demanding that the “mastermind” of the attack be arrested.

According to the Hindustan Times newspaper published on Sunday, two suspected attackers were arrested and police are looking for a third who fled.

According to television channel NDTV, the two suspects claimed to be part of a gang led by Lawrence Bishnoi. This man, currently incarcerated, is accused of being at the head of a criminal gang having committed numerous murders.

Baba Siddique, 66, a former minister of the state of Maharashtra, was shot several times in the chest outside his son’s office in Mumbai, according to Indian media.

The deputy chief minister of the state of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, who belongs to the same party as Mr. Siddique, declared himself “shocked” by this “cowardly attack”.

This homicide “will be the subject of a thorough investigation and strict measures will be taken against the attackers”, he indicated on X, assuring that “the mastermind of the attack will be found”.

The assassination comes just weeks after Mr. Siddique’s security was stepped up following death threats, and ahead of elections in Maharashtra state scheduled for later this year.

Mr Siddique was close to several Bollywood stars and known for throwing large parties.
