Quantinuum’s H1 quantum computer successfully runs a fully fault-tolerant algorithm with three logically encoded qubits

A multidisciplinary team from Quantinuum, the QuTech Institute (at Delft University of Technology) and the University of Stuttgart used the H1 quantum computer to demonstrate a notable advance in fault-tolerant operations

CAMBRIDGEEngland, and BROOMFIELD, Colorado, September 28, 2023 /PRNewswire/ –Fault-tolerant quantum computers that offer radically new solutions to some of the world’s most pressing problems in medicine, finance and the environment, and facilitate truly widespread use of AI, are sparking global interest in quantum technologies. However, the various timetables established to achieve this paradigm require major breakthroughs and innovations to remain feasible, and none is more urgent than the transition from purely physical qubits to fault-tolerant qubits.

In one of the first significant steps on this path, scientists from Quantumthe world’s largest integrated quantum computing company, and collaborators demonstrated the first fault-tolerant method using three logically encoded qubits on the QuantinuumH1 quantum computer, developed by Honeywell, to perform a mathematical procedure.

Fault-tolerant quantum computing methods are expected to pave the way for practical solutions to real-world problems in areas such as molecular simulation, artificial intelligence, optimization and cyber security. After a succession of significant breakthroughs in recent years in the fields of hardware, software and error correction, the results announced today by Quantinuum in a new article on arXiv, Fault-Tolerant One-Bit Addition with the Smallest Interesting Color Code (in French, Fault-Tolerant One-Bit Addition with the Smallest Interesting Color Code), are a natural step forward and reflect the increasing pace of progress being made.

Many companies and research groups focus on fault tolerance by managing the noise that naturally occurs when a quantum computer performs its operations. Quantinuum is a proven pioneer, author of world firsts such as the demonstration of gate entanglement between two logical qubits in a fully fault-tolerant mannerusing real-time error correction, and the simulation of the hydrogen molecule with two logically coded qubits.

By performing a one-bit addition using the smallest known fault-tolerant circuit, the team achieved an error rate nearly an order of magnitude lower, ~1.1×10-3 against ~9.5×10-3 for the non-coded circuit. The observed error suppression was made possible by the physical error rates of the quantum charged device (QCCD) architecture used in Quantinuum’s H-series quantum computers, which are lower than those of all other systems known to date . These error rates are within the range at which fault-tolerant algorithms become feasible.

Ilyas Khanproduct manager and founder of Quantinuum, said that‘ in addition to continuing to provide the quantum ecosystem with proof of what is possible in these early days of quantum computing, the current demonstration is remarkable for its ingenuity. Our H-Series ion trap architecture offers the lowest physical error rates and the flexibility derived from qubit transport, which allows users of our hardware to implement a much wider choice of error-correcting codes. errors, making this demonstration possible. Further significant advances in computing can be expected in the years to come as we combine the quality of our hardware with meaningful real-world tasks.

The low-overhead Clifford logic gates, combined with the transverse CCZ gate of the three-dimensional color code, allowed the team to reduce the number of gates and two-qubit measurements required for the addition of a bit, by more than 1000 36.

Ben CrigerQuantinuum principal investigator and lead author of the paper, added thatthe CCZ gate, which we have demonstrated here, is a key ingredient of Shor’s algorithm, the method of Monte Carlo quantum, topological data analysis and a multitude of other quantum algorithms. This result proves that real hardware is now capable of making all the essential elements of fault-tolerant quantum computing work together – state preparation, Clifford gates, non-Clifford gates and logic measurements.
