Israel has bombed Yemen's capital, Sana'a, and the port of Hodeida, in response to missile launches by Houthi rebels in recent days. The Israeli media reported it. The airstrikes occurred during a speech by the leader of the pro-Iran Shiite group, Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. They targeted several sites, including Sana'a international airport and a power plant controlled by Houthi rebels, witnesses and insurgents said.
Houthi-affiliated Al Masirah TV described the attacks as “Israeli aggression.” Sources in Israel, cited by Haaretz, confirmed that the Israeli Air Force is carrying out strikes in Yemen with three central targets: Sana'a International Airport, energy production sites in the city and the ports of Hodeida, Salif and Ras Kanatib on the coast. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have confirmed the raids against the Houthis in Yemen.
Head of the WHO in the Sana'a airport bombed by Israel
The director general of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, was at Sana'a airport when Israel launched an air attack on the Yemeni airport.
“As we were about to board our flight from Sana'a, about two hours ago, the airport was bombed. One of the crew members of our plane was injured. At least two people were reported to have died. The control tower, the departure hall, a few meters from where we were, and the runway were damaged,” Tedros wrote on X, adding that he had to wait for the damage to be repaired before he could leave again.
“I and my colleagues at the UN and WHO are safe.” The WHO chief reported, again on X, that he was in Sana'a “to negotiate the release of detained UN staff members and to assess the health and humanitarian situation in Yemen.” “We continue to call for the immediate release of the detainees,” Tedros added.
