Samsung now has Dolby and its Atmos in its sights. In a press release published Friday, the Korean firm presents its own audio technology for immersive three-dimensional sound. Announced as “revolutionary”, Eclipsa Audio was developed in partnership with Google.

The technology is not entirely new: the format on which it is based was until now known as IAMF, for Immersive Audio Model & Format. IAMF is a free technology, under the BSD license, whose governance is ensured by the Linux Foundation. Samsung and Google have been the two most active members since 2020.

Eclipsa Audio will allow users to fine-tune audio elements, including the location and intensity of sound, as well as spatial reflections. Coupled with HDR10+, the two technologies are Samsung and Google’s answers to Dolby’s Atmos and Vision. And as always in this area, it is the number of compatible devices that will prevail.

Unsurprisingly, Samsung equipment will therefore be equipped with Eclipsa Audio this year. Thus, all models of televisions and soundbars released in 2025 will be compatible. The future Galaxy S25 smartphone probably will too. Later this year, Google will open the possibility of uploading videos to YouTube containing Eclipsa Audio tracks, as was the case a few years ago with Dolby Atmos.

« We believe Eclipsa Audio has the potential to change the way we experience sound. We can’t wait to see how the creator community uses it to create new and innovative audio experiences said Jim Bankoski, vice president of engineering for Google Chrome.
