Fans of Formula 1 and automobile history will have the unique opportunity to obtain an emblematic piece of the circuits: the 1998 Williams FW20, formerly driven by Jacques Villeneuve, will be auctioned in Paris by RM Sotheby’s on 5 February 2025. This car, which marked the golden era of F1, will be presented at the prestigious event at the Carrousel du Louvre, in the Parisian “Golden Triangle”, for a third consecutive year. Last year a Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta Competizione sold for more than 10 million Euros.

A historic model offered directly by Williams Heritage

From the Williams Heritage collection, this Williams FW20, chassis FW20-03, represents an important page in the history of Williams in Formula 1. It played an essential role during the 1998 season when the team finished 3rd rank in the constructors’ championship. During this season, the reigning world champion, Canadian Jacques Villeneuve, led this chassis to 5th place in Australia and 4th place in San Marino. The car was also used in qualifying at the Argentine Grand Prix before Villeneuve was forced to retire after a collision with David Coulthard. It then served as a reserve car for testing, driven by Juan Pablo Montoya and Heinz-Harald Frentzen.

A copy for collectors and Formula 1 enthusiasts

This historic single-seater is equipped with a “display” Mecachrome V-10 engine and remains eligible for historic racing events. It constitutes a choice acquisition for any collection centered on motorsport and F1. Its charm and power captivate fans of competition and speed.

The Williams FW20-03 will be on display to the general public at RM Sotheby’s London auction on November 1 and 2, 2024 at the Peninsula London before being put on sale without reserve in Paris. Its price is estimated between $290,000 and $430,000 CAD (€200,000 – €300,000), an amount that testifies to its rarity and its appeal to Formula 1 enthusiasts.
