On September 30, the opening ceremony of Unreal Fest Seattle 2024 was held. A golden opportunity for Epic Games to show its progress on Unreal Engine 5. After Nanite and Lumen, MegaLights, a new technology based on direct lighting and shadows, is appearing.
And indeed, we observe more realistic details in real time. The difference with and without MegaLights is striking. There are more than 1000 lights that combine perfectly to project dynamic and almost perfect shadows. Epic Games’ goal is to have an economical but high-performance engine. Indeed, they want the Unreal Engine to be easy to use and to run on as many machines as possible.

The presentation was also running in real time on PS5, and this is no coincidence. Sony has invested no less than $400 million in the company. The advantage that Epic Games advocates is making games more fluid thanks to Mega Lights. In fact, thanks to its shadow management, this new system makes lighting effects less demanding. But other changes in 5.5 should be noted, notably the overhaul of Motion Matching. This way, the character will be able to perform several animations successively without requiring too much programming.
In addition, Epic Games has not decided to only attack consoles. They are making their efforts to ensure that high-end games on mobile are supported with the use of Unreal Engine 5.5.
