Bought for $150,000 this Macintosh prototype is for sale again

Twiggy, a Macintosh prototype built by the young company Apple in the early 1980s, will return to auction rooms. After first being put on the market in 2019, where it found a buyer for $150,000, the prototype is for sale again.

If Macintoshes are already very rare and sought-after products, “Twiggy” is a unique piece. The prototype actually has a 5.25-inch disk drive. However, Macintoshes were marketed with a 3.5-inch drive. This little detail is a legacy of the “Lisa” computer launched by Apple a few years before with this larger disk drive.

This device is one of two machines that were restored and put back together in 2014. At the time they worked and could run software from the 80s for a real trip back in time. For 10 years, enthusiasts of the Apple brand have been looking for other “Twiggy” Macintosh prototypes. There are 5 devices in the world, the others having been destroyed as requested by Steve Jobs.

$150,000 for a 40 year old computer?

The “Twiggy” device already shook the auction rooms in 2019. During this first sale, it was finally acquired at the price of 150,000 dollars. If the buyer remained anonymous, he no longer seems satisfied with his investment. The Bonhams auction house has just recovered the device, and is offering it for sale again.

She estimates it would be worth between $80,000 and $120,000. However, interest in old Apple computers is exploding. At the beginning of the year, Christie’s sold an Apple Lisa 1 for more than $882,000. Faced with such a sale price, the owner of this Macintosh “Twiggy” could not resist the temptation.
