Sometimes all it takes is a television series to give you another chance. An observation confirmed recently by the massive influx of players on a video game that was nevertheless criticized when it was released in 2018.

Since April 11, Fallout video games have experienced a resurgence in popularity. The latter is obviously due to the release on Prime Video of the television adaptation of the video game saga. On the ratings aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it displays 93% positive ratings from the press and 88% from the public. On the heels of this success, many viewers made an interesting observation. In recent years, certain video game series have had a second lease of life thanks to the quality of transmedia works. There was the television series The Last of Us but the most telling example remains Cyberpunk 2077 with the animated Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. So today there is Fallout with the adaptation of the same name, as evidenced by Bethesda’s statement recently.

Almost 5 million players across all Fallout games in a single day!

In short, the Fallout series brings fans of science fiction and post-apocalyptic universes back to video games. A successful communications mission for Bethesda, especially since Fallout 4 benefits from a “next-gen” update on April 25, expected on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. Enough to appreciate the fourth numbered episode in the best conditions, especially since it is considered one of the best.

More than a million players and we probably know why

But venturing into the wastelands of lower-rated Fallout doesn’t scare players away. Witness the statement from the official Fallout page on X (formerly Twitter) regarding the number of players in Fallout 76:

Thank you to over a million of you who ventured with us into in just one day…

However, Fallout 76 is by far the lowest rated episode of the saga. On JV, it’s a 09/20 that sticks to him. At its launch, many major bugs were present: absence of NPCs, bugs of all kinds… This didn’t pass for anyone and it was the score of 52/100 that we saw on the metacritic score aggregator. But how can we explain such a resurgence in popularity? After the Fallout series, perhaps those uninitiated to the universe simply concluded that the best possible experience was the last episode released and therefore decided to take action with Fallout 76. That being said, Bethesda l ‘also made it free for one week from April 11 to April 18. Enough to perfectly coincide with the broadcast of the series. It’s hard not to see this initiative as a major justification for this renewed popularity.
