MHR second row Paul Willemse saw his stoppage extended for three more months, following repeated concussions. The rest of the career of the ex-French international is compromised.
Will Paul Willemse play rugby again one day? This is the question currently being asked, as the Montpellier club announced this Tuesday that the stoppage of the second line has once again been extended by three months. Willemse (32 years old, 32 caps) suffered a sixth concussion in the space of a year after a match against Stade Français at the start of the season. An appointment with neurosurgeon David Brauge (referring doctor of the FFR) had been appointed to decide on the continuation of his career and the doctor had decided on a three-month break.
If I have to stop, it’s not the most serious thing in life
With the renewal of this period of absence, Willemse’s future in rugby becomes even darker. For Midi Libre, the person concerned confided following his last concussion: “Am I OK if my career ends today because of shock? Honestly, yes. Be careful, that’s not what I want. But if I have to stop, it’s not the most serious thing in life. I am proud and happy with everything I have done. I will begin the next chapter of my life.”
The original South African played 18 matches last season and even started with the French XV in the first match of the 2024 6 Nations Tournament against Ireland. He received a yellow card and a red card during this meeting. Montpellier, Willemse’s club, will still have to do without its player.
