The draw for the 2024 African Nations Championship (Chan) will be held on Wednesday, January 15 at the Kenyatta International Convention Center in Nairobi, Kenya. This event will mark a key step in the organization of the competition by the three host countries: Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya, who will host the matches from February 1 to 28.
According to the announcement made on Sunday by the Confederation of African Football (Caf), the national teams of the co-organizing countries, as well as Senegal, reigning champion, will benefit from an advantage in the distribution of hats thanks to their rank in the Caf ranking system. Morocco could also be awarded a place in Pot 1, given their performances in the last three editions of the tournament.
To date, 18 countries have passed the qualification stages to take part in the event which is expected to attract a huge global audience. In addition to the Pot 1 nations, Pot 2 will include Guinea, Zambia, Madagascar and Sudan. Finally, Pot 3 will include teams from Mauritania, Niger, Congo, Angola, Burkina Faso, Nigeria, Central African Republic and Democratic Republic of Congo.
Kenya provides two stadiums, the Nyayo and the Moi International Sports Stadium-Kasarani, currently in the renovation phase to be ready on time. However, the country is facing difficulties in completing the works within the stipulated time.
Despite the organization of the draw, uncertainty hovers over the holding of the competition due to delays in finalizing the infrastructure. According to information relayed by Le Quotidien, Caf is considering two options: either relocate the event to another African country, or cancel the tournament. After a recent inspection, a number of deficiencies were noted, compromising the completion of the project.
Remember that during its previous edition in 2023, which took place in Algeria, Chan brought together 18 teams from different nations for the first time. The stakes remain high for optimal organization of the 2024 edition.
