The 27-year-old won his first two matches of the season in the mixed national team competition against Brazilian Thiago Monteiro and China’s Zheng Zhizhen.

He was due to face Alexander Shevchenko in Perth, but withdrew at the last minute, with Kazakhstan leading 1-0 in the quarter-final against defending champions Germany, following Elena Rybakina’s success against Laura Siegemund 6 -3 6-1.

This package seems a priori motivated more by caution than by the seriousness of the injury.

Zverev, still chasing a first Grand Slam title, began the new season with high ambitions after finishing 2024 ranked second in the world, winning more matches than anyone except Italian Jannik Sinner.

The Australian Open begins on January 12. The German reached the semi-finals in Melbourne in 2020 and 2024.
