Supreme humiliation for the Ford Mustang!

Unthinkable a few years ago, the Mustang Mach-E, an electric SUV, is now the best-selling Mustang.

Since its launch in 1964, the Ford Mustang has been a symbol of American automotive culture. An icon of power and style, it left its mark on generations of petrolheads with its magical V8s and its timeless design. But faced with market developments and environmental requirements, the Mustang took a bold turn in 2019 with the introduction of the Mustang Mach-E, a 100% electric and… SUV version.

When the Ford Mustang Mach-E was revealed, purists and many car enthusiasts cried foul. How could Ford transform a legend of thermal performance into an electric vehicle? And even worse, in an SUV? But the most critical are now very discreet. The Mach-E quickly won over, offering performance consistent with Mustang heritage, excellent autonomy, and regular software updates. In just a few years, it has become one of the best-selling electric vehicles in the United States, just behind the Tesla Model Y.

The 2024 sales figures confirm this trend. While the thermal Mustang had its worst year with sales down 10% compared to 2023, the Mach-E exploded the counters at +27%. Several factors explain the decline of the thermal model, first of all a controversial design for the seventh generation launched in 2023. Add to this an increase in prices, often linked to the various Penalties, and a general disaffection for two-door coupes in a dominated market. by SUVs and pickups, and you have the key to a grotesque situation.

The success of the Mach-E is also based on its numerous improvements since its launch in 2021 thanks to remote updates, and variants ranging from entry-level at less than 45,000 euros to the sporty GT Rally. With a 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds, the latter has nothing to be ashamed of compared to the V8 and does even better if we exclude the crazy GTD. In short, Ford felt the tide turning and adapted. Darwinism you say?
