Top 14 – The notes of Vannes – Clermont: Baptiste Jauneau in the flow, Francis Saili in the vague…

The Clermontois won in (19-20) with Baptiste Jauneau in movement and dynamism, while Francis Saili, who entered the game, made a series of blunders on the Breton side.

The young scrum half from Clermont was in good shape this evening! First author of a first good breakthrough in the 27th minute, he did it again a few moments later by slipping like an eel into the Breton defense. In the animation, he knew how to stick to the ball perfectly and bring dynamism to the Clermont attacks. His 50/22 in the 33rd minute is splendid and allows Clermont to settle into the Vannes camp. He also missed a kick, taking the ball out with a direct touch.

Not in the spark like his friend from the hinge, the Clermontois on the other hand showed himself to be fair. Already, in a knife match, he achieved a 100% kick (two conversions and two penalties) in the respectful silence of La Rabine. On the defensive side, seven tackles are to his credit for no misses. At his rate, he was penalized once.

The Breton opener has nothing to reproach himself for despite his team’s defeat. As usual, he masterfully managed the Vannes offensives. It was he who served Romaric Camou on a plate in the 11th minute for RCV’s first try. And then, his 100% against the posts gives even more depth to his performance. A 5 out of 5 on the foot which was not enough, but which is to be congratulated. Despite a direct hit in the last ten minutes, the number 10 also managed to gain a lot of ground with his penalties.

The flops

Four penalties alone… The Argentinian was not disciplined enough this evening at La Rabine. The third wing line contributed to Clermont’s (too many) numerous penalties (16 in total) through his lack of lucidity. Notably one which brought three points for Vannes (43′) and the other which allowed the Bretons to enter the 22 meters. To his credit, eleven tackles for one miss.

We will not take away from the flanker his love for combat. Sparkling for several weeks, the former player nevertheless went a little too far this Sunday evening. In a few minutes, Simon Augry was caught twice by the patrol (19th and 23rd). An indiscipline which did not necessarily help his team at the start of the match which they nevertheless dominated.

In a team in difficulty, a lot is expected of the New Zealand international. Coming into play shortly before the hour mark, Saili did not really contribute to his team. On the contrary. He almost cost RCV dearly because of a completely missed pass in his camp. With ball in hand, the former Racing 92 player never managed to put the Clermont defense in difficulty. In the 78th minute, the center was guilty of a forward attack in the Clermont 22 meters. An error which stopped a Breton offensive in its tracks. Frustrating.
