NHL: Jonathan Huberdeau has regained his composure

Jonathan Huberdeau has regained his composure.

A year ago, the Quebec striker ended the month of December with a single assist, on the eve of New Year’s Day. This month, he has 13 points in 11 games heading into the clash between the Calgary Flames and the Vancouver Canucks.

Huberdeau has already surpassed his goal total (15) from last year and equaled that of the previous season halfway through the regular season. An excellent playmaker, he is reliable in both directions of the ice and we trust him at the end of the game to protect the lead.

“We joked that he became a power forward,” defenseman Rasmus Andersson said.

“I’m super happy for him to see that he’s back on track. »

Huberdeau had 55 and 52 points in his first two campaigns with the Flames, a huge drop from the 115-point season he had with the Panthers in 2021-22. This year, his playing time has increased, he is more complete and he could reach 62 points at this rate.

“I feel like I’m at my peak,” he said after the Christmas break.

“Especially on the other side of the puck. I’ve never really been the best at it, but I take pride in it. I have a lot more fun. »

Huberdeau uses his offensive instincts while killing penalties and being used late in games by head coach Ryan Huska. The latter appreciates his ability to read the opponent’s games.

His teammates and coaches applaud Huberdeau for his conduct since his arrival in Calgary in 2022. He speaks to the media after difficult defeats, he is able to talk about his own difficulties, often with humor, he takes players on his wing, he works hard and his presence is appreciated in the locker room. He is a leader within a team that remains in the race for the playoffs.

“Even in difficult times, his mentality was always good,” Huska emphasized. “When things weren’t working offensively, he made sure to improve in other areas. I’m proud of him. This is something difficult to accomplish. »

Today, Huberdeau plays with more freedom and confidence.

“I never thought I would have to change my game one day,” admitted Huberdeau.

“When you have success, you never imagine that you will have a down year, but I think it helped me for the future. I think as you get older, you slow down. This is where we need to play more in both directions. This is what will serve me well as I get older. »
