The 2024 Sports Personality of the Year has no face. Or rather she has thousands. Its shape is changing, malleable, moving like a wave, capable of lifting or expanding. His voice is made up of a multitude of voices which speak, shout, murmur, sing, blow in the same breath. The tendency is rather to segment it, to separate those who pay (the VIPs), those who must be monitored (the visitor sector), those who do not want to be like everyone else (the ultras); yet we choose to bring them all together because it is as an indissociated and indivisible whole that the crowd establishes itself as the major sporting event of the year.
Everywhere, in 2024, attendance records for sporting events will be broken. The biggest of them, the Summer Olympics, broke the record for the highest number of tickets sold: 9.5 million in Paris 2024, compared to 8.3 million in 1996 in Atlanta. With the Paralympic Games, the total of 12.1 million tickets sold is better than London in 2012 (11 million). The Paris 2024 Games set spectator records for women’s basketball in Europe, rugby sevens, beach volleyball and handball. There were also crowds for the events in Paris: the marathons, the cycling races and in particular the Butte Montmartre transformed into the Alpes d’Huez. Everywhere, this fervor led athletes to sublimate themselves and created a warm and caring cocoon.
