Many miscellaneous facts and dramas have sadly punctuated the year 2024. A look back at those who scored Sablé-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe) and its region.
1 – Bomb threat at high school
The day of Monday January 15, 2024 was disrupted, at leastpublic multipurpose school Raphaël-Elizéin Sablé-sur-Sarthe. A bomb threat was sent by email shortly after 8 a.m. to the establishment.
Immediately, all the students, nearly 1,250 high school students, were evacuated. Everyone was gathered in the Georges-Mention room, waiting for their parents to come pick them up.
The alleged perpetrator of this bomb threat had been identified. The 16-year-old young man who attended the school was arrested and then tried. On January 16, Pierre-Reverdy college was also targeted by a bomb threat. Around 450 students had been evacuated.
2 – The LDC logo dismantled
Greenpeace carried out several actions on Thursday February 22, 2024 in the early morning, including one at the headquarters of the poultry giant, LDCin Sablé-sur-Sarthe. Their target was sites “which embody the current agro-industrial system and which are responsible for the social and environmental crisis which affects this sector today”.
This Thursday, February 22 in the morning, between the logos of Gaulois and that of Fermiers de Loué, that of LDC had disappeared. The three letters from LDC were back on the poultry group headquarters building on Tuesday March 12, 2024 (they were not returned, but were replaced).
3 – 500 gendarmes deployed
From Tuesday February 27 to Thursday February 29, 2024, the gendarmes were omnipresent in different towns of Sarthe, from La Ferté-Bernard via La Flèche, Sablé-sur-Sarthe Mamers, the surroundings of Le Mans and even Montval-sur-Loir and the Lude.
In all, 500 gendarmes were mobilized. An operation aimed at making an impact, called “Clean space”. In Sablé-sur-Sarthe, a helicopter bayed the sky. Results, in Sarthe: 32 fines for narcotics, 300 grams of cannabis seized, a rifle recovered in a vehicle, 40 offenses for traffic offenses and 108 fines.
4 – The Mouv’enfants association mobilized in front of the Abbey
The Mouv’enfants association carried out a “shock action”, Tuesday March 19, 2024 at 12 p.m., in front of Saint-Pierre de Solesmes Abbey. Objective ? Denounce the presence of Roger Vangheluwe, former bishop of Bruges (in Belgium) who admitted, on television, to sexual violence against his nephew between 1973 and 1986.
“The Belgian pedophile bishop Roger Vangheluwe lives here, we demand that he be tried. » This is the message which was plastered on the walls of the abbey church of Solesmes by activists from the association which fights against all forms of violence against children and adolescents. Since the mobilization of March 19, the ex-bishop has been displaced.
5 – The Nortene company on fire
And large firevisible several kilometers around, was triggered in a building the Nortene companyformerly Celloplastin Val-du-Maine (Mayenne), a small town located about ten kilometers from Sablé-sur-Sarthe, on Wednesday June 19, 2024.
The firefighters were called around 2 p.m. for a fire in a storage building of the gardening products company (tarpaulins, garden landscaping, etc.)
In total, 109 firefighters were dispatched to the site as well as 30 engines. The flames destroyed half of the building. Out of seven cells of 3,000 m2 each, four were destroyed.
6 – Two deaths at La Suze-sur-Sarthe station
At around 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday August 21, 2024, a man was fatally struck by a train traveling on the Nantes – Angers – Le Mans line, at the La Suze-sur-Sarthe station. Traffic was interrupted for two hours between Le Mans and Sablé-sur-Sarthe, while emergency services, firefighters, gendarmes and SNCF technical agents intervened.
It was about the dsecond fatal accident in La Suze station, in the space of a little over two months: on June 4, 2024, a 17-year-old girl was killed, also hit by a TGV.
7 – Fire destroys a building: a reflex saved lives
And fire broke out in the town of Juigné-sur-SartheFriday September 27, 2024. According to firefighters, the fire started around 3 a.m., in an apartment in a two-story building. It spread to the roof. It was a person going to work who alerted everyone, helped by a resident.
The initiative of the motorist then the reflex of the resident who honked the horn allowed the residents of the building to evacuate in time! Around ten apartments were affected by this fire.
8 – A lifeless body found in a garage
Thursday, November 14, 2024, around 10 a.m., a vehicle fire was reported in a private garage, located at 28 rue de l’Hospice, in La Flèche. Seven firefighters from the La Flèche emergency center intervened. A deceased victim was found by firefighters and an investigation was opened by the Le Mans public prosecutor’s office.
On the day of the tragedy, criminal identification technicians carried out surveys and flags were hung to also prevent pedestrians and cyclists from approaching the scene. Since then, no information has leaked regarding this death.
9 – Trial postponed in the “Fillon Affair”
And 3rd trial was to open in “ the Fillon Affair »Monday November 25, 2024. If the guilt of François Fillon, Penelope Fillon and Marc Joulaud had been recorded by the Court of Cassation in April 2024, the latter requested a third trial to determine the quantum of François Fillon’s sentence.
As a reminder, François Fillon was sentenced on appeal to four years of imprisonment, three of which were suspended. The former Prime Minister’s defense requested the postponement of his trial scheduled for November 25, 2024 (Me Levy, François Fillon’s lawyer, was unable to defend his client due to health reasons). The referral was accepted by the court. The trial is postponed to Monday, April 29, 2024 at 1:30 p.m.
