Tennis. Wimbledon – Gauff: “The ranking is just a number, but if I was No. 1…”

It is the only Grand Slam in which Coco Gauff has not yet performed at her best level. Less comfortable on grass, the American will still be expected to London this year, she is now world number 2. In 2023, Gauff had failed in the first round to Wimbledon facing his compatriot Sofia Kenin. A defeat that is difficult to accept. But behind her she was able to bounce back, and that’s what she explained at a press conference this Saturday. She will challenge another American: Caroline Dolehidein the first round.

“After Wimbledon 2023, I was really in the dark”

“The ranking is just a number. I think if I was number 1, I might feel different.”declared the one who has never gone beyond the 8th finals at Wimbledon. “To me, numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 are all interchangeable if you’re not number 1. I didn’t pay too much attention to it.” According to Coco Gauff, “everyone has the same opportunities” to win the title“it’s just a matter of who performs best that week.”

Beaten in the first round last year, the American doesn’t have good memories of it. “It was a tough time for me. I think the next two or three weeks I was really in the dark. That experience taught me that a bad moment doesn’t last forever. I have a lot grown up. I am happy to have taken advantage of this moment to strive to improve myself. I still know that I am far from being good enough.
