Today’s big match at Euro 2024: a first duel between neighbors with Italy and Switzerland

The first two round of 16 of Euro 2024 football will be played on Saturday, with Switzerland-Italy and Germany-Denmark.

At 6:00 p.m., the Olympiastadion in Berlin will host the first knockout match of this Euro, a duel between two neighboring countries, Switzerland and Italy, the defending champion. Both teams will approach this round of 16 with high morale.

Murat Yakin’s Switzerland thanks to a well-controlled group stage, with a victory over Hungary (1-3), a draw against Scotland (1-1) and a draw (1-1) against Germany having put the host country in difficulty.

Italy, for its part, managed to escape from the “group of death” thanks to a 1-1 split snatched in the last seconds of eight minutes of stoppage time against Croatia via a goal from Mattia Zaccagni. Before that, Luciano Spalletti’s men had overthrown Albania (2-1) and lost against Spain (1-0).

At 9:00 p.m., Germany will meet Denmark at the BVB Stadium in Dortmund. The German team impressed in the opening against Scotland (5-1), convinced against Hungary (2-0) and was afraid against Switzerland (1-1). The new generation, led by Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, wants to continue to make the host country dream and bring Germany back to the quarter-finals of a major tournament for the first time since 2016.

Denmark qualified by drawing their three games: 1-1 against Slovenia, 1-1 against England and 0-0 against Serbia. Kasper Hjulmand’s ‘Danish Dynamite’ will be hoping to repeat the feat of 2021, when they reached the semi-finals. The Danes will also remember Euro 1992 in Sweden, when they won the Euro by beating Germany 2-0 in the final.
