Women’s National Team: Four Returns and Two New Faces for the End of Qualifying

The selection for the last two qualifying matches for the Euro against Turkey and Azerbaijan is known. National coach Pia Sundhage is recalling four players from May. Two players will be part of the women’s national team for the first time.

“We are one step away from returning to League A of the Nations League. Now it is a matter of drawing the right conclusions from the last camp and finishing this campaign successfully. This will be a next step to be able to perform in a year’s time at the Euros at home,” says Pia Sundhage. Amira Arfaoui (1. FC Nürnberg), Ana-Maria Crnogorcevic (Atlético Madrid) and Noelle Maritz (Aston Villa) are making their return to the national team after missing the matches against Hungary. As is Sydney Schertenleib (GC Frauenfussball), who recently announced her transfer to FC Barcelona.

For two players, this is a first. Leila Wandeler (Olympique Lyonnais) was part of the 2023 U17 team that qualified for the Euro semi-finals and made her debut for Lyon’s first team last season. Caterina Regazzoni (Northwestern Wildcats) has also already played for several hopeful teams and made the jump from FC Zurich to American university football two years ago. Sundhage: “It’s always great to welcome returning players who haven’t been able to make it recently. And yet – Switzerland has a strong future ahead of it and I am looking forward to working with two new talented young players.”

As in the last camp, two additional players will be named in addition to the 23. Naomi Luyet (YB Frauen) will spend the first three days with the team, but will not play the two matches. Lia Kamber (FC Lucerne) will participate in the entire camp and replace Géraldine Reuteler, suspended for yellow card, during the match in Turkey.

The women’s national team will meet on Monday, July 8 in Kloten. The trip to Turkey will follow on Wednesday, July 10, where two days later, the Nati will face Turkey in Izmit (July 12 at 19:30 CET). The return to Switzerland is scheduled for Saturday, before the Euro qualification concludes for Switzerland on Tuesday, July 16 with the home match against Azerbaijan at the Stade Olympique de la Pontaise in Lausanne (19:00).

Public training in Lausanne

Before the home game, the women’s national team will hold a public training session at the Stade de la Pontaise in Lausanne. On Sunday, 14 July, from 16:30 to 18:15, fans and football enthusiasts will have the opportunity to see the Nati stars in action up close and then get photos and autographs.
