Mike Matheson receives bad news on the trading market

Mike Matheson finds himself in a difficult situation. The Montreal Canadiens defenseman learns he could be traded to the Carolina Hurricanes, but that’s not all: he also discovers that his value isn’t enough for a one-for-one trade.

This news was confirmed by Alain Crête of RDS, who said it would take much more than Matheson to convince the Hurricanes to trade Martin Necas.

Imagine the blow for Matheson: not only does his team want to part with him, but he learns that he is not considered valuable enough for a direct trade for a top player.

According to Pierre LeBrun, the Winnipeg Jets, Chicago Blackhawks, Calgary Flames and Boston Bruins are also interested in Necas.

But the Hurricanes are greedy and intend to create a bidding war for their talented 25-year-old Czech striker and demand a player of equivalent caliber in return.

Some rumors suggest that Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes might consider including Matheson in a trade for Necas. However, Crête admits that other elements will have to be added to reach an agreement.

Alain Crête recently expressed his opinion on this subject during the show “Le 5 à 7” on RDS. Despite an impressive 61-point season in 2023-24 for Matheson, Crete is adamant:

“It’s going to take more than Matheson. »

This statement resonates with journalists who recognize that even though Matheson is an excellent defender, it is not enough to convince the Hurricanes to part ways with Necas.

It is important to note that if the Canadiens manage to land Martin Necas, they will have to come to terms with him on a new contract.

Necas will be a restricted free agent this summer, and his next contract could be around $7-7.5 million per season.

Since the Hurricanes’ elimination a few weeks ago, sources indicate that Necas is not interested in continuing his career in Carolina. The question therefore remains where it will land.

Mike Matheson finds himself in an awkward position as the Canadiens explore the possibility of trading him.

Cruel reality. Even star players, who come from Montreal, can find themselves in a weak position on the transaction market.

For the Canadiens, acquiring Martin Necas for Matheson would be a godsend, but if you have to give the moon with the defenseman, it’s a good idea.

The CH locker room does not want Matheson to be traded. Every player told Kent Hughes that. But the CEO did not listen to them.

If Carolina finally accepts Matheson only for Necas…the transaction will be done…
