Moto2/Moto3 Assen Pirelli: Here’s why Pirelli brings standard allocation to the ‘cathedral of speed’

For the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen, Moto2™ and Moto3™ riders will have at their disposal the standard allocation decided by Pirelli for 2024, made up of standard tires available on the market.

More than three weeks after the Mugello race, where, thanks in particular to the contribution of Pirelli tires, all track records were broken, the riders in the Moto2™ and Moto3™ categories will tackle the TT circuit this coming weekend history of Assen, Holland. Also known as the “Cathedral of Speed” due to the high speeds and sudden changes of direction which, especially in the past, make it one of the most difficult circuits in the championship.
It is not a particularly demanding circuit for tires and, for this reason, Pirelli will provide the drivers of both categories with the standard allowance planned for the 2024 season, consisting entirely of tires that are regularly on the market and can be purchased by all drivers.

“As in Mugello, for the Assen race we will use the standard allocation for both categories, made up of tires regularly sold on the market. We are convinced that the solutions in the range are adapted to the characteristics of the Dutch circuit, a track with a “traditional” layout, with many changes of direction at high speed and slow corners, but without significant braking. This makes it less demanding on the front tire, for which the only point to watch may be the operating temperature, especially on the left side, which is used less. At the rear, however, a high level of grip is required, especially when lean angles are significant. The asphalt, redone in 2020, offers a good level of grip and is not too abrasive, but the real unknown will be the weather conditions: we are already in summer, so we must expect higher temperatures than those that we usually encounter in WorldSBK, but even in summer in this region, rain can be a variant to take into account. In this case, riders will be able to rely on our standard SCR1 wet weather tires.”

Attribution : DIABLO Superbike slicks, at the front 6 units per rider in SC1 compound (soft) and the same number in SC2 (medium) for both classes; at the rear 8 units in SC0 (soft) compound and the same number in SC1 (medium) for Moto2™ riders and 7 units in SC1 (soft) and the same number in SC2 (medium) for Moto3™ riders. As always, in case of rain, for both classes there is the DIABLO Rain solution in SCR1 compound for the front (5 units) and rear (6 units).

The route: The Assen TT circuit is considered one of the most difficult in the championship, with its series of long and constant corners, a few hairpins, fast chicanes and strong acceleration on the exit. Given these characteristics, the tires are not very stressed from a thermal point of view, but they must still offer great precision and a lot of directional stability to the drivers.

Low temperatures: When the asphalt is cold, as can be the case early in the morning, the rear tires can suffer from fatigue problems, especially when using soft compounds and the track is still relatively poorly sealed, as is generally the case. the case on Friday.
