While the organization was preparing to participate in the auction with the aim of acquiring 95 acres of land which would have been used for the construction of a new amphitheater, the auction scheduled for the 27th June was canceled on Friday.

The Arizona State Land Department made this decision to redirect the steps in the process to allow the Coyotes organization to obtain a special permit that would allow the construction of a National Hockey League (NHL) caliber arena on field.

The Coyotes franchise was deactivated last April after months of controversy. The NHL made the decision to grant Utah a team that brings back all the rosters of the defunct Coyotes as an expansion team.

The Coyotes organization reacted to the Arizona State Land Department’s decision on that she was very disappointed with this decision.

“This unprecedented action by the State of Arizona places the future of NHL hockey in Arizona in serious doubt,” she said in a statement.

The Coyotes and their owner Alex Meruelo also indicated that they intended to take legal action following this decision.
