For the Nati, 31 assists and 31 years

Like the players, the followers of the Swiss team struggle to fall asleep after a match. For them too, the adrenaline needs to wear off. This gives them time to think, search their memory and try to answer this question: has the Nati ever managed a performance as accomplished as this 2-0 over Italy in Berlin? Yes, probably, but not in the reference matches that we usually think of. During France-Switzerland at Euro 2020+1, the Blues were far superior to these pale Azzurri but they conceded three goals in ten minutes and only qualified on penalties.

This question is only of interest because it allows us to measure the progress made by this team since the start of the Euro, and more generally by Swiss football over the last thirty years. Thirty-one years if we go back to the last victory of a Swiss team over Italy. Of that heroic match, we no longer remember that Italy had played the entire second half with ten men, after Dino Baggio was sent off, any more than Hottiger remembers how or why he, the right-back, had found himself in a centre-forward position to score his goal.
