The haka world record is again New Zealander

New Zealand is kiwis, Middle Earth but also and above all the haka, this dance of Maori origin. And as a symbol, they have just broken the world record for the largest haka.

More “Entertainment”

More than 6,000 people gathered for a giant haka. Thus, New Zealand beat the record that had held since 2014.

Sunday September 29 is precisely 6531 enthusiasts who invaded the Eden Park stadium in Auckland to perform this performance. While the organizers expected 10,000 participants, this figure was still enough to beat the previous record of 4,028 people. But on Māori land, it could be expected to be much more than just a matter of numbers. It was a matter of national pride.

In Switzerland we also have our records:

“It’s not just numbers, it’s our culture that we highlight on the international stage”

explained Nick Sautner, CEO of Eden Park, with pride.

It’s not hard to imagine that the latest record set in France motivated New Zealand to pursue one goal: to regain the title.

The participants performed the famous haka “Ka Mate”, which rugby fans know it well thanks to the All Blacks. This haka, created in 1820 by the warrior chief Te Rauparaha of the Ngati Toa tribe, became world famous, notably thanks to the famous rugby team during the six nations tournament.

Beyond the performance, this event also had a charitable purpose. The funds raised were intended for a foundation that provides music therapy to people with special needs.

The haka, which once prepared warriors for combat, is today a ritual during major ceremonies, sporting competitions and even significant moments in Maori life.
