Images that many believed were unimaginable just a few days ago: thousands of Syrians gathered to celebrate 2025 in the streets of the capital. In the streets of Damascus, smiles light up all faces, children have fun, while sellers display clothes, festive decorations and traditional festive foods, Tuesday December 31, 2024. A Santa Claus even distributes gifts to the youngest.
And for older children, a DJ set was set up in a large town square, making women and men dance together to electronic rhythms. After more than 13 years of devastating war and authoritarian regime, the fall of Bashar al-Assad allows us to find a little lightness this New Year's Eve.
This year therefore promises to be different for many, who will finally taste freedom. “It's clearly a good start to the year, the atmosphere is magnificent, especially when we go to the Bab Touma and Al-Imariya district, which are decorated for the holidays. Now I'm walking with my friend and we're planning a family party for tonight“, rejoices a Damascene.
If the year 2025 promises to be uncertain, this other Syrian still savors the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime: “What happened in 2024 is that we have been liberated, and we really feel that freedom. This is the best thing that has happened to Syrians in 14 years“. A few meters away this inhabitant of Damascus is also rejoicing. “The situation is much more secure than before. Now you can go out without fear of being arrested“, he exclaims in the direction of the restaurant he has reserved for the occasion.
Near a large church in the center of Damascus, security forces from Hayat Tahrir al-Sham are present in large numbers to ensure the security of the festivities and prevent any attempted disruption by supporters of the old regime. “People from Europe and Beirut, who did not dare to come to Syria before, are now here“, welcomes Abou Al-Abed, the commander of the forces on the ground.
After being able to regain control, Syria regained its welcome and its unity. Today we all come together, from all faiths, to celebrate the New Year.

New Year's Eve celebrations in Syria are not limited to Christians, who make up 10% of the population. Most Syrian cities also participate in these festivities marking the end of the year and the arrival of a new one.
