The organization does not hesitate to speak of little Mr. Burns as a “miracle” since he was saved from the flames by the Sherbrooke firefighters on the night of December 12 after having suffered serious burns and poisoning. carbon monoxide.
Knowing from the outset “that we had a serious case on our hands”, the SPA urgently involved a veterinarian from a partner clinic to take care of the little survivor. The feline was first put in an incubator so that he could breathe and was finally welcomed by a veterinarian to provide him with home treatments, including daily changing of bandages.
“When veterinarians judge that there is a glimmer of hope for an animal, we will do everything to save it. […] We thought this case was worth it,” explains Alexis Savoie, communications manager for SPA Estrie.
About two weeks later, he is happy to be able to give better news. Even if the recovery is not complete, Alexis Savoie speaks of “immense progress” for the kitten, initially unrecognizable after his burns.
“Three of its little paws are almost completely burned, and its claws have even melted. His tail will probably have to be amputated. But despite all this, Mr. Burns is fighting to survive,” the SPA wrote on December 18.
An encouraging recovery
“Now he is very energetic and demands petting. It’s good to see that despite the ordeal he’s been through, he’s behaving like a normal kitten,” the SPA manager reported a few days later.
“This story touched everyone here… even if we see all the colors of it every day. […] It seems to have reached a lot of the population too,” he adds, referring to the success of the call for donations made by the organization following this rescue.
No less than $9,000 was raised in just a few days, which is particularly beneficial in a context where the Canada Post strike has slowed down the influx of donations in recent weeks.
The Estrie SPA is approximately halfway toward reaching its goal of $100,000 for its annual campaign, which is therefore likely to continue in 2025, indicates Mr. Savoie.
It recognizes that community donations are an important source of income to finance the care of their residents. “This unfortunate story, I’ll put it like that, still helped us a lot. […] We had not anticipated this reaction, but we are very happy with the result,” also comments the communications manager, speaking of a type of campaign that is quite unusual at the Estrie SPA.
The objective of the organization remains to achieve the complete recovery of Mr Bruns and to possibly be able to place him for adoption, even if it is still too early to know when exactly, also specifies Alexis Savoie.
