Internal tourism, a lever for economic, social and territorial development

Internal tourism is now a lever for economic, social and territorial development, contributing to job creation and the revitalization of related sectors at the local level.

The Minister of Tourism, Crafts and the Social and Solidarity Economy, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, indicated, Monday in the House of Representatives, that the nights of internal tourism amount to 30 million, taking into account the different forms of accommodation, in addition to classified hotel establishments. In response to two oral questions on “internal tourism”, Ms. Ammor stressed that these figures confirm that the Moroccan tourist is the first customer of the Morocco destination.

However, the minister noted that the sector suffers from the problem of seasonality, specifying that the data reveals that demand exceeds current supply, particularly during the summer holidays. Internal tourism, she added, benefits from particular attention in the new roadmap for the tourism sector.

Ms. Ammor indicated that two specific sectors have been planned in this roadmap for internal tourism (“Seaside” and “Nature & discovery”), with the aim of developing new tourism products adapted to the needs of Moroccan tourists. throughout the year and not just during the summer period.

In this sense, the minister specified that five major axes are being developed. This involves providing suitable accommodation, through the promotion of investment in tourist products particularly popular with Moroccan tourists while regulating accommodation with locals to reduce the costs of tourist services.

To this end, she cited the acceleration of the adoption of the implementing texts of Law No. 80.14 to integrate new forms of accommodation, as well as the efforts made to improve the attractiveness of the tourist product by implementing enhancement of the medinas, the creation of tourist circuits, cultural activities and the strengthening of outdoor and sporting activities.

The second axis concerns the strengthening of air connectivity in order to improve connections between Moroccan destinations and to open up certain regions, while the third axis consists of including internal tourism in the flagship projects of the roadmap, such as the DinoParc in Azilal, three natural parks in Ifrane, Toubkal and Souss-Massa, the ecological stations of Oukaïmeden and Khénifra, as well as two amusement parks in Casablanca and Marrakech.

As for the fourth axis, it concerns the improvement of tourism promotion, in collaboration with the Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT), with the launch of the “Netla9aw f’bladna” campaign which focuses on internal mobility between different regions. The fifth axis concerns the strengthening of qualified human resources, in particular tourist guides in cities, circuits and natural spaces.
