A scene as bloody as it was improbable took place late Monday afternoon in the city of St. Gallen. Two dogs fought and a man finally inflicted an ax blow on one of them to make him let go…

The dog fight took place at around 7:30 p.m. on Schönaustrasse. It involved a pit bull that was on a leash and a Maltese that was running loose. The pit bull bit the small dog on the neck and wouldn’t let go.

The owners of the two dogs and passers-by tried to intervene, but it was impossible to get him to let go, the St. Gall municipal police communicated this Tuesday.

A resident saw the scene from his balcony and decided to get involved, armed with an axe. He “hit the pit bull in the back,” said the police. The dog then released its victim.

The pit bull did not survive his injuries and died shortly after while being taken to a veterinarian.

The man who inflicted the fatal injury is a 43-year-old German national.

An investigation was opened to determine the exact course of events. The St. Gallen police do not provide details on the condition of the bichon or what possible risk lies with the perpetrator of the ax blow.
